We all have a basic knowledge of stretches whether through sports or our own exercise routines, but let’s be sure that you are stretching in the most effective manner.
The first important thing to remember is that each of us has a different build and anatomy. It is always important to be aware of your body and your abilities each time you stretch, never pushing over that friendly point of pain. As always, any pinching or burning sensations are not a good sign. Be sure to pay attention on a daily basis as to how the stretches you are doing feel. Just notice any differences from side to side or day to day.
Many times people ask, what stretches should I do every day? The answer is that it depends. As you come to a few active care sessions you will learn what stretches are best for you and what the proper technique is. We work with Dr. Cait to target the areas that are in most need of your attention in stretching. So it really depends on your current lifestyle and current state of wellbeing as to which stretches will be best.
Another important technique of stretching is how long you are holding the stretch for. Our instinct is to hold for a few seconds and then release but the reality is that our body does not benefit from those few seconds. It actually takes at least 30 seconds for the body to recognize that you are in a safe, supported stretch and only then do the other muscles relax and allow you to sink deeper into the targeted area.
So listen to your body, ask us which stretches are best, and hold for at least 30 seconds and you will be on your way to better stretching!
